Type 1 narcolepsy is referred to as narcolepsy with cataplexy. Patients who suffer from this condition have narcolepsy episodes, episodes of sudden sleep, accompanied by cataplexy. Cataplexy means the loss of skeletal muscle tone. The severity of muscle tone loss ranges from softening of facial muscles to a postural collapse. Hypocretin-1 levels are often found low in narcolepsy type 1 patients.
