Other medical conditions commonly cause central sleep apnea. In particular cases, these conditions also result in a distinct breathing pattern called Cheyne-Stokes breathing. However, central sleep apnea can occur without this breathing pattern and may have an underlying medical cause, most commonly heart disease or kidney disease. In this instance, it's called "central apnea due to a medical disorder without Cheyne-Stokes breathing."
