Sleep talking, also called “somniloquy,” is an abnormal behavior that is considered one of the parasomnias. One can talk during their sleep regardless of their sleep phase; therefore, it is challenging to categorize sleep talking as a REM or NREM-related parasomnia. When it happens at the REM phase, it is generally the vocalization of the speech in the dream. It represents a difficulty in arousal when it occurs in the NREM phase.
