Muscle cramps are sudden and painful muscle contractions beyond the person's control. They last from a few seconds to a few minutes. The cause is unknown, and treatment options are limited to massage, muscle stretching, etc. Leg cramps that wake you up at night are not uncommon and are called sleep-related leg cramps.
