Insufficient and superficial breathing in obese people is called obesity hypoventilation syndrome. This diagnosis is made if it cannot be attributed to any other cause other than obesity. It's characterized by shallow and inadequate breathing during wakefulness. In arterial blood samples, low oxygen and high carbon dioxide levels are detected.
