Pilots & Air Traffic Controllers (FAA)

The FAA may require an evaluation if risk factors or symptoms suggest Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

When Evaluation May be Required

  • Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
  • Loud snoring or breathing pauses
  • High blood pressure
  • BMI of 40 or higher
  • Neck size of 17 inches or more

If Diagnosed

Most pilots and air traffic controllers can continue working if OSA is treated and documented.

FAA Requirements

  • CPAP or approved treatment
  • Demonstrated treatment compliance
  • Ongoing compliance documentation
  • Pilots: Special Issuance may be required
